AMD naming convention is something else.

5800X is an 8 core CPU
5900X is a 12 core CPU
5950x is a 16 core CPU

5800XT is a slightly faster 8 core CPU

so of course a

5900XT is a slightly slower 16 core CPU

@paul the answer is binning. The 5900XT was released years after the rest of the lineup you listed as a way to get rid of 5950x chips that were slightly under spec.

Props to AMD for keeping an AM4 alive with good chip releases years later. I upgraded my AM4 3600 system to a 5800X3D a couple of years ago and it will likely be good enough until the end of AM5.

@derekbeachy I understand the reason for the chip, not the reason for the name.

@paul I think the biggest part of my point was the fact that it was released years after the original lineup.

I do see your point, but I’d have more problems with the naming if the entire lineup was in production and being marketed as their primary platform, rather than these oddball releases that they are using to clear out old chips.
