Is there any non-shady explanation why my Sungrow solar inverter suddenly started to randomize its MAC address?

@DiConX maybe it runs on an off-the-shelf linux distro and they updated that base system, changing the default to be randomized mac?

I'm pretty sure it's the default on a couple Linux distros / networking management tools, for better privacy in public networks.

@jplatte The thing is that it does not seem to have updated anything and it should not do so.

@jplatte Because automatic updates are disabled. Sun grow is notorious for introducing bugs with new firmware, so I handpick updates.
