We may be heading toward a world in which it seems peculiar or even foolish to read an article or book in its entirety. Incredibly, schools - K-12 & higher ed. alike - seem reconciled to becoming the accomplices of Big Tech by pointing us there.

@alfiekohn I think the core problem is that our society has been built on the ideas of efficiency, metrics and endpoints. AI is just enabling people to go far harder here. Things like "Read a book" are tasks to be completed and not just things you spend time with because you enjoy them or find that time valuable to you.

I think a lot of school enforces this, and it probably boils down to 'because capitalism', but the recent gamification and listification of everything has made it explicit.

@alfiekohn Similarly, a nerdy story here. A friend's boyfriend was asking me about Warhammer 40k, and I explained that I had mostly spent my time so far just painting models. He was shocked: "Don't they have services that will paint them for you?" I had to explain that painting little dudes was a huge part of the appeal.
