1/4 New preprint! We designed an open-source system for auditory brainstem response (ABR), a research & clinical auditory test. Costs $400 to build (vs $10K to buy a proprietary one) and works great! All open-source if you want to make one for your lab or classroom. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2025.12.17.694771v1
2/4 The key is the ADS1299 chip, a commercially available diff amp for EEG. We designed auxiliary hardware & software to capture, store, & analyze the data. Also, we showed ABR surprisingly non-lateralized, and we used it to detect hearing loss in mice. All code shared on https://github.com/Rodgers-PAC-Lab/ABR2025
3/4 Our hope is that this brings ABR to the masses, either for research use in the lab or teaching use in the classroom. (Maybe even clinical use, though that would require much more testing.) You can also measure EKG, EMG, VEPs, etc. If you can solder, you can build this thing!
4/4 Did we miss a critical citation or an alternative interpretation? Want advice on how to build one? Reach out with any questions or suggestions on the manuscript! lab.chris-rodgers.com Thanks to NIH and Whitehall Fdn for funding!
