Guess there will be “avatar 4 from root to dust” or some other shit to do with the fourth element (pretty sure the first one was air).
He’s got at least 7 movies planned. He said 4 and 5 could be turned into books, but nothing about 6 and 7 🤨
Whenever I see that these movies are successful I’m always wondering who’s seeing them? Myself and a few friends all attend movies regularly and none of us even know anyone who saw the second one in theaters. Like I’m sure people are going, it’s just weird.
g0d0fm15ch13fIt’s me, I like these movies. The movies themselves are fine, but I love the universe. Where else can I find a whole planet of slender blue cat people wearing next to nothing? (Outside of anime, I’m genuinely asking because I’d love that universe as well)
I mean… there’s not really a whole lot of worldbuilding. There’s the implication of world building, but they don’t really go into any depth. It’s world presenting.
That doesn’t matter much though? It’s a wonderful world to be presented.

Ok… you do get how relatively tiny your circle of friends is. Everyone you times 1000 is fractional amount compared just to the population of your country.
The movie made 340 million because the franchise is beloved. I know that shocks the Reddit/Lemmy hive mind that is convinced the movies have no cultural significance.
I went to go see it. Wicked and this are the only movies I saw in the theater. It was great fun.

Yeah, how could a movie about native Americans and their struggle against the colonizers be relevant in the US.
halcyoncmdrThere’s a decent chunk of people that watch them solely for the bleeding edge CGI technology.
Others that like those kinds of stories. Nothing in the story is unique. Avatar, Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves, and numerous others are all fundamentally the same story told in different ways. There’s a reason these stories keep being told and people still like watching them.

This one wasn’t worth it, there’s been no advancement since 2. And since most of the filming has been done for 4 and 5 already, I’m not expecting them to show any technology growth either.
I saw it in a Dolby theater rather than IMAX. I don’t think IMAX would have made enough difference to change my mind.
At least “bleeding edge” CGI would be funny, like the fucked-up Peter Cushing in Rogue One.
Rushed CGI is different, doesn’t matter if it’s bleeding edge or not.
Native Americans are still not ok. And archetypes will always work. People NEED these stories to be retold.

I can understand the first sequel hype, but it was kinda lame and I just dont see how people are bothering to see the next.
After the first dune, the sequel premier in my town had a whopping total of 13 people show up to watch.
I feel like Avengers normalized multi film continiuity, and people only feel compelled to show up like brand loyalty to a story/franchise.
Which is dumb because most if not all of these franchise films usually have no significant input from the original talent. James Cameron literally showed up to collect a pay check and go home.
I mean then again, people pay for FIFA and NBA2K every year so its not like it’s far fetched. But cmon, this is why these media products dont get as heavily criticized compared to genuinely superior alternatives.
I’m seeing this one next weekend when I go visit my gf. I enjoy the series for them just being fun movies. Not amazing by any means, but enjoyable times out at the theater. My gf even saw the second one twice in theaters.
I went to see the second one purely because I wanted to see the cinematography, I didn’t expect too much from the plot. No disappointment there.
I may yet do the same with the third one. I’m also not expecting too much from the plot there. I just want to see cool cinematography and fancy world-building. It’s entertaining in its own way and best seen on the big screen.
Yeah, I can watch all sorts of bad movies if the technical aspects fascinate me. Avatar hasn’t let me down on that front so far.
I’m one. I saw the first one three times in the cinema. I didn’t like the second one as much, but I did like most of the new characers and I’m looking forward to being in that world again.
LlamatronSomething I’ve never really understood about the Avatar movies, derivative plot, poor script and tedious length aside - is the CGI meant to look real? Are we meant to watch these and think this could have been filmed on a real alien planet?
I remember the fuss when the first one came along over how amazing the visuals were. And they are impressive but I’ve always thought of them as very pretty animated movies and at no point thought anything looked photorealistic.
Everything except the visuals and the sound is cheap binding to hold the visuals and sound together.
If you look at us a showcase for some of the best digital art ever created rather than a movie that needs to have a great plot, acting, or any kind of real emotional impact, then you can see it for what it is.
The movies are absolutely beautiful, and an absolute spectacle of what is possible, but that’s all they are.
