When constructed, they were described as modern luxury flats equipped with all mod cons, which provided space, comfort, privacy and hygiene. These mod cons included an internal fitted kitchenette, a bathroom with indoor toilet, a lounge and separate bedrooms for parents and children. Situated on a low ridge, they were positioned to allow the maximum amount of daylight into each flat and to provide panoramic views across the city.

As a result, for the first few decades, these flats were in great demand amongst Glasgow's social housing tenants. However, the rents were also relatively high in comparison to other housing in the city. There were also a number of initial teething problems, which included lifts too small to allow furniture to be carried in them, meaning it had to be taken up the staircases by hand instead.
