Japan has been experimenting with piezoelectric floor tiles since 2008! In busy spots like Tokyo’s Shibuya and Tokyo Stations, special tiles convert the pressure from millions of footsteps into electricity using the piezoelectric effect. Each step generates a tiny bit of power (around 0.1W per step), enough in high-traffic areas to light up LED displays, signs, or holiday lights.
It’s a cool demo of harvesting kinetic energy for sustainability, though the output is small and costs are high—more about awareness than powering cities.
Mind-blowing how everyday walking could contribute to green energy!
