A band I grew up, and man... Ran Benson's voice is just magnificent. And I think the fact that a Jewish kid, from Philadelphia that went to Antioch... became the modern incarnation of Bob Wills... is just perfection.

And Asleep at the Wheel a bit more recently... and strange random thing. My HS had Asleep at the Wheel as our prom band. One advantage of growing up in Austin in the 1980s.

But if we're going to talk about picking... we have to talk about Earl Scruggs, and here with Steve Martin, who is actually a damned good banjo player.

@petrillic dang. possibly the most underrated artist of my life. that was incredible. (and his latest, "club husband" is good in an extremely different way; he has a crazy amount of range)
@glyph I had dismissed him originally as hiding behind autotune, but once I heard him sing, it was clear that auto-tune was an artistic choice purely.
@petrillic a common mistake. I'm not sure I ever dismissed him for autotune as such, but I certainly didn't take him as seriously as I should have
@petrillic I call that shit.
@Homoevolutis0 That's the great thing about taste... it's personal.
@petrillic ask for the chupacabra on south congress.
@petrillic I blubbered like an idiot the day he died.
@TheJen @petrillic At work on the day he died we accidentally heard the news on the radio our shop played daytimes and rest of day we were all useless. The show had been at a venue very close to where I grew up and the crash in Wisconsin in an area I knew. Somehow picturing the route and visualizing the crash just made it so much worse.
@petrillic
We were friends. The whole family.
@petrillic me too. All them brothers are friends.
@petrillic I remember the story in steve martin's book about how when he first started playing banjo he knew he sucked, but he'd imagine what he'd sound like in 20 year and that kept him going. it's been longer than that now and hell yeah it's paid off
@petrillic I sing some bluegrass. Practiced on my motorcycle in the hill country.
@petrillic I saw Billy strings and was not impressed.
