I put out a cat cave (soft thing shaped like an abstract Christmas tree with a round hole in the front) and a dish of dry food on the porch for the neighbor cat who seems to always be outside. It’s the only dry spot anywhere.

I now have multiple videos of raccoons wanting the food but being entirely terrified of the cave. They eventually got the food but I’m not sure how.

The food dish has a ring of a rubbery material around the bottom, or they’d have just gradually moved it. Maybe momma came and moved it away from the big mean cat cave.

Later, they still came up and checked on the big mean cat cave. Young raccoons are pretty curious little buggers.

Are they thinking its a trap?

Or a badger lair?

Who even knows. I don’t know what color range their eyes can see, so I was thinking maybe it’s something I don’t see. They are cautious around new things and noises. It was in my house for a long time, so it may have smells and definitely has cat hair. The movements displayed were curiosity (slow approach, seeking angles), encountering something that is a potential threat (lower posture, slow movement), something that is a potential toy/food source (standing up, circling, tapping).
