also gonna do the same for video games

for this let's keep it under... 10 hours?

systems: pretty much anything prior to ps3 (inclusive)/360, plus ps4 and switch. steam if there's a mac version.

can see what I've played/plan to here: https://backloggd.com/u/coffeentacos/

keep em coming!
just a few more left, got a good mix here! some I'd planned to play, others are entirely new to me!
oops, forgot to post the finished one.
going to get started on the first game soon, but I do want to wrap up Blue Prince first, which has consumed me (in the best ways) these last few weeks
@coffeentacos I have some kind of weird admiration for people who stuck with Blue Prince. I found the idea fascinating, but the repetition of it really killed my enthusiasm.

@bss I can definitely see that. A way I got around it is trying to maximize the information I got each run. It also feels so board gamey to me that runs never really felt all that repetitive?

I'm at a point now that most runs are very short as I'm trying to do specific things to apply things I've learned and if the draws aren't giving me what I need, I move on to the next one

@coffeentacos yeah, maybe there's an element of "Guide Dang It" that I should just accept in order to better understand what I should be focusing on. I started by going in totally cold, thinking I'd experience the game better that way, and had most of my runs just end with no new accomplishments after going through mostly the same rooms as before until I ran out of moves.

@bss it's so hard to know what to focus on early on! there are loads of things that look like they could be relevant, but if you note everything it's going to be overwhelming. my approach was to take note of a few things if I felt they'd come up, and leave other things that could just be background for later. main focus was to get to room 46 and taking notes/screenshots of things that seemed to provide guidance towards that.

once things unraveled more, my notes expanded a lot because at that point I knew what to look for and how to interpret it, otherwise it's just noise

@coffeentacos "noise" sounds about right at my current level of understanding, lol. I'll have to come back to it at some point!

@bss if you do get back to it, I'd be happy to help give nudges if they're wanted/needed!

I do think it's one that benefits from even just having someone to talk to about as you get in deeper. I had revelations as I was talking to a friend about certain things lol

@coffeentacos I'll keep that in mind as I force through my own ridiculous backlog, haha
@coffeentacos Good luck with yours. I kicked off mine last night with the game Tchia. :)
@gnitro thanks! good luck to you too! I doubt I'll have much issue, just a matter of finishing the games and keeping the focus going lol
@coffeentacos Keeping the focus going is always the hardest part. lol
@coffeentacos Have you played Sylvie Lime? It's on Mac and shortish.
@mayazimmerman I haven't yet, no! have it installed however, so this'll be a good push to do it!
@coffeentacos gravity circuit is soooooo good! if you like mega man (especially zero), it's a joy
@wizardneedsfood it's been on my list for a while, looking forward to playing it!

@coffeentacos Last Command is far from one of my favourites, but I also haven't played many short games. It's at least kinda unique for being snake x danmaku, so maybe the uniqueness may be worthwhile?

I can't remember if I saw Stray, but it's a comfy game to play for the most part.

Anything else would probably just be weird arcade games that require emulation.

@rgbunny definitely not against emulation! Last Command was neat from what I tried, though I didn't play much of it. thanks for the pick!

@coffeentacos If you want some weird arcade games:

  • Libble Rabble - a really unique game where the main gameplay loop is to circle around and entrap stuff with a thread (you control both ends independently), but there's quite a few things to manage
  • Naname de Magic - one of those vs puzzle games, but with diagonal match 4!
  • Gussun Oyoyo - a game where you build a path to the exit for an NPC, can be super tilting to play though
  • Super Locomotive - driving a train from one station to another, you need to use both the side view and top down view to fend off enemies and navigate your way around
  • Snap Jack - this game just feels like a fever dream

Now that I'm looking at my Backloggd, I can probably recommend some decent arcade games too

@coffeentacos I feel sure you must have played these already because they're right up your street, but they're not coming up so: Fairune & Fairune 2, Crimson Shroud all on 3DS.
@anarchaeopteryx I own the Fairune games but aside from trying the first out on mobile I never did properly play them! And yeah, I love Crimson Shroud though I don't know if I ever actually finished it.
@coffeentacos Well I have them all down as around 8 hours, so doable if you want to go back to them. Fairune is really beautiful with a great soundtrack, but sometimes required use of a guide to figure out where to go next iirc. Crimson Shroud had such an interesting concept, it felt like a demo of a larger game that never got made.

@anarchaeopteryx nice, yeah I'm seeing the Fairune collection as a whole is ~8 hours, so I may just do both!

and I'd agree, the bulk of the Guild games had a feel like Crimson Shroud of being kinda... proof of concept more than complete games?

@coffeentacos I guess the Level-5 team of that era ended up spending their time on Layton and Inazuma Eleven and then Yo-Kai Watch, so they never really got to make anything serious or experimental like those Guild games in a more full length title. I still have Jeanne d'Arc on my to play list though.
@anarchaeopteryx Jeanne d'Arc is one I'd picked up but between being awful at sticking to games at the time and that genre of game never quite clicking for me, I've never made much progress on it, much as I found it appealing
@coffeentacos I know I picked it up just before the PSN stopped supporting the Vita, but I don't remember if I ever actually tried it. Strategy RPGs definitely take a certain frame of mind for me to get into as well.
