“America has blown 80 years of accumulated goodwill and trust among its allies, our American moderator was told. A rock-steady assumption of allied defence and security planning for literally generations has been that America would act in its own interests, sure, but that those interests would be rational, and would still generally value the institutions that America itself worked so hard to build after the Second World War. America’s recent actions have destroyed the ability of any ally to continue to have faith in America to act even within its own strategic self-interest, let alone that of any ally.

The officer then said that even a swift return of America to its former role won’t matter.

Because “we will never fucking trust you again.”

Matt Gurney: 'We will never fucking trust you again'

Some blunt talk for our American neighbours at the Halifax International Security Forum.

The Line
@letoams so disappointed in us
@letoams Sorry to say it and it's not too say there aren't loads of decent people in the USA, but I absolutely agree.
I don't trust the US government at all any more.
@tdp_org @letoams
As an American, I fully agree with not ever trusting our government or populace as a whole. It would be immensely foolish us given the stakes and how insane the last ten years and especially the last year have been.
@letoams The US have betrayed all its allies. Trust is extremely difficult to regain.

@letoams

None of this makes any sense, if we leave out the part about well-crafted long-game information warfare operations succeeding against the US.

An operation, both externally and internally directed, that changes the minds and hearts of Americans, making enough of us into monsters so that our nation then burns its friendships and drives itself into a ditch.

@letoams We never should have trusted you in the first place.
Get your armed goons out of my fucking country.
@letoams it went even worse than we europeans expected. I still can't believe how Trump became to power (again)
@letoams
For all intents and purposes, this seems to be exactly what Trump wants.

@levitte @letoams The latest national security strategy document says, “We want to maintain the United States’[sic] unrivaled ‘soft power’”, yet their very behavior fatally damages it. They fundamentally do not understand soft power, because authoritarians and bullies do not have it, and *can not* have it.

This line is simply here because they heard American soft power is a great strategic asset their whole lives, but do not understand it at all. So they think it’s something concrete like the number of fighter planes or GDP or something.

@letoams Russia 2.0, with Disneyland!
@letoams It feels like treason and betrayal. But the cut goes both ways. The US have been strong because it led a coalition who helped carry the burden.
Now the US wants to go alone and have declared war on the rest of the world.
That is imperial hubris, the US might be strong but not that strong and its economy is in shambles.
We are witnessing the spasms of a dying empire.
@letoams We will not trust the US even if we pretend otherwise. Individual Americans we know or who share European values should be welcome. Tens of thousands have moved to Europe since Jan 20. More welcome.

@letoams

Still swearing like an American though... 🤷 Cultural change takes time.

@letoams

Excellent article on how the US has destroyed the trust that other nations might once have had in them.

@letoams
Sadly for Australia, we have taken an oath of loyalty - F'k'n AUKUS.
