The EU population is 450 million people with an average density of 106 people/km2. The US is 350 million at 33 people/km2.

There are probably better metrics than straight density.

I think that’s also a big point, US is all urban sprawl, and that make it hard to build public transport.
How? China is bigger and has great public transport, still making excuses for fascism crazy
