every f-ing time the file manager (nautilus) crashes while I'm working I lose a tiny bit of what's left of my sanity 🤪 🤪

(yes, those numbers are counts of how many times that particular crash has occurred - and it's under-counting by at least a factor of 2 or 3)

I can't be the only one hitting those crashes multiple times per *hour*, sometimes every few seconds - right? RIGHT??

@decathorpe ""I can't be the only one […] RIGHT??"" I assume you are (or one among few), otherwise Reddit and Hacker News would be full of it and how bad Gnome and/or Fedora is. 😂

Which is why I'd assume it's something in your setup that is broken or triggers a codepath that is broken. At least it almost always was something like that when I had such problems.

@knurd42 oh I know it can't be a common issue, and it also looks like a race condition that doesn't trigger consistently, but it's been happening for 2 years now (since Fedora 40).

I have tried tracking it down, but the crashes are somewhere deep in nested closures that are called asynchronously and that's way above my pay grade ...

the issue has survived a clean Fedora reinstall and also switching gtk4 renderer backend - vulkan or gl renderer doesn't make a difference ...

@decathorpe Since F40? Ugh! 😞

Good luck dealing with that – and finding the cause sooner or later. Or maybe you are lucky and it simply goes away one day…

@knurd42 yup, filed upstream two years ago ... https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/3657

(also just noticed that today it was closed as a duplicate of a bug that is just a few weeks old. huh??)
