@dw_innovation does it work in China?

@dw_innovation @kuketz Does this app work as promised, and has it been through independent scrutiny?

Most important to know it's secure - lives may depend on that, once users in hostile environments start using it. This is quite a burden and therefore the app should have been thoroughly scrutinised first.

@dw_innovation getting news in offline mode sounds interesting

@dw_innovation I mean that's cool... But how will this work once google closes free installation of Apps on Android once and for all?

And how will the news reach the app? Is it peer to peer? If it's just downloading from a server how should that not be blocked?

@dw_innovation honestly good to see this, props to you for creating this!❤️❤️❤️✨✨
@dw_innovation independent from what? DW is a state news agency
@mattesilver @dw_innovation from corporate interest for one. USA private and public interest second. Theocratic interests third.
@mattesilver adding to what @fabriziob said ... calling @dw_innovation state media is somewhat of an over simplification and the independence of public broadcast in Germany is by no means perfect, but overall still pretty good.
@mattesilver @dw_innovation yep. Old school journalism, payed by state. I understand it would be more free and trustful if it was owned by techbros or oligarchs 🙄
@dw_innovation That is so so cool, but why is it not open source?
@dw_innovation is the app open source, and the source publicly available at e.g. Codeberg.org (or self-hosted Forgejo), GitLab (.com or self-hosted), or Github? That would allow it to be included with #IzzyOnDroid or #FDroid for added trust (both places perform additional screening).

@IzzyOnDroid @dw_innovation

"Ultimately, there are only two ways to get the app: via Paskoocheh or directly from us."

@chbmeyer never to late to rethink. And wasn't there a saying like "all good things in life are 3" (or was it "free")? Especially for an app like this, it would be a good thing having a 3rd party confirming it, ideally even with #ReproducibleBuilds (no offense or demand meant of course, just a suggestion 😉) @dw_innovation

@dw_innovation

A very much better idea would be to allow people to completely independently access DW as a news source. The existence of this app on a device can already cause a lot of trouble for people.

Decades ago, in times of the Cold War, the world was able to receive news from everywhere. Even in the desert or the jungle, no government could block access. But this technology was abandoned unnecessarily, just to save a little money.

SHORT WAVE RADIO!

Great, thank you. Hopefully more public services will strengthen the public infrastructure. Public money, public resilience. 👍 Opensource is missing?

@dw_innovation While this is a great effort it also brings additional problems.

This is an excerpt from the app's privacy policy:

2. Categories of data processed

[...]

Geotracking
We use a combination of language settings, device settings and the country ID of the SIM card to enable rudimentary location detection. [...]

Device ID
To uniquely identify the device, a hash is generated upon initial installation. It is not the original device ID, but an identifier generated by the app.

@dw_innovation Wunderbar! Inject NATO propaganda "where it's needed most"!
