I'm conceivably 3 steps away from a Revolutionary War soldier. My father knew a Civil War soldier when he was growing up. It would be a stretch, but that soldier could've known a Revolutionary soldier.

That's few enough people to not have stories too badly scrambled in the retelling. "Long" time frames aren't really that long when you break them down.

There’s some bit of trivia I’m too lazy to look up: I think it was maybe Zachary Taylor (US prez 1849-1850) whose grandson was still around a few years ago because of extremely late-life reproduction in two successive generations.

I remember that! Well, sort of. I don't actually remember any of the details, but I remember hearing the story, and thinking how bizarre it was having a connection from so long ago.
