cstone@mcc I've encountered old archives that used ar(1) to store data, instead of tar/zip/etc. AFAIK, in that case, none-none-none would suffice just fine. (Probably not a great answer, just the first one that came to mind when thinking "when have I used a binutils tool where it 100% did not matter which toolchain it's from?"
