Haven't thought about it much, but I find I'm vaguely in sympathy with the ban on under-16s on social media - but only because I'd ban everyone from algorithm-driven social media if I was in charge.

As for the practicality of the under-16 ban, I'm highly dubious. But I think it's another of those performative laws which governments don't actually care about enforcing (also see the ban on vapes).

@timrichards There are a whole bunch of politicians and public servants who believe that you just need to make a law or regulation, and that's the problem solved. They never think as far ahead as enforcement. I don't know if it's just that the announcement is enough, or if they actually believe everyone will just do what they are told. 🤷‍♀️
@jillL They're just after a particular headline, then think the job is done (sigh)
@timrichards I worked in govt for years under the "direction" of a govt board. The board members thought that as soon as an announcement was made or a line was written in a strategy, that was "problem solved". No thought as to what program was required or how it was going to be implemented, or how long it would take to see results. Then they'd get all disappointed and confused that the problem wasn't instantly solved. 🤪
