current state of things (MNT Reform Next)
BTW the date in the titlebar is wrong because real time clock wasn't set yet :D
@mntmn SO PRETTY (though I'd definitely go for purple) 😍
@mntmn so damn cool. The whole MNT concept is inspiring.
@mntmn Looks really good, I like it!
@mntmn looks awesome!
Can you please share a few words about the current state of power management (e.g. what battery life to expect)?
@lichtlos i only have one of two battery packs in there currently, but as soon as that's also back together i can do some runtime tests (in the next weeks)
@mntmn A >10 % battery connoisseur, I see ^__^
@mntmn I'm still waiting for something similar with something more x86-64 friendly. And no, the other company you might be thinking of doesn't count anymore.
@cameron_bosch what do you require x86-64 for?
@mntmn A lot of apps and games I run daily. Many of them propietary unfortunately.

@cameron_bosch @mntmn

Emulation could be doable for some of the simpler apps, but it generally can't help you much with games. ^___^

@rl_dane @cameron_bosch uhm what do you mean "can't help you much"? i've played lots of x86-64 games on rk3588... here's fallout 4, for example (a bit of an extreme case though as i ran it with an egpu) https://mastodon.social/@mntmn/115550168490406750

also, you can run some windows stuff https://lasersword.club/@bnys/115549747696209244

and have you heard of the Steam Frame?

@mntmn @rl_dane Many modern PC games, even ones that don't break under Proton, are either too new to run under the RK SoCs, have issues with Denuvo, Easy Anti-Cheat, or BattleEye (even if those do not disable Proton support), or have other issues that prevent them from running well on anything except for x86-64.

And there are some other apps that I cannot replace that don't work or have serious issues under ARM or RISC-V, and either are propietary or have limited manpower.

@mntmn @rl_dane Many of these games would give even most PC handhelds a workout and the Switch 2 a stroke trying to run them.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33, some recent or upcoming JRPGs with Denuvo or EAC (but with Linux support not being disabled), and Baldur's Gate 3 all have issues launching or, in the case of BG3, have strange CPU usage issues.

@cameron_bosch @rl_dane ah. i didn't expect people to play that kind of stuff on a laptop. the serious gamers i know have gaming PCs and i have a ps5 for aaa titles (i don't play online multiplayer games so no idea about the whole anticheat thing)

@mntmn @rl_dane I have not touched a traditional console with anything but disgust and anger since I started using my OG Steam Deck. Heck, I exclusively game on PCs or retro emulation. Many games that used to be console exclusives are now coming to PC at launch.

This of course was around the time Windows 11 released and I was like "nope, nope, nope, NOPE" and moved to Linux shortly after the RTM. I don't like closed "ecosystems".

@mntmn @rl_dane The other reason is that my AMD AM5 desktop has serious issues with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth causing instability with the entire system no matter what I do; I'll probably have to replace the motherboard at least before I can use it...

@mntmn @cameron_bosch

Not a gamer, but I've heard the anti-cheat things are really egregious.
Basically just a windows rootkit.

@rl_dane @mntmn I agree with that assessment 100%. I don't play games that intentionally are broken under Linux, but the ones that do still work, I'm okay with.

It's not running at the kernel level on Linux anyway. If it did, it better be FOSS or it's coming out!

@mntmn @cameron_bosch

That's pretty sick!

I just figured you couldn't really play high-end games under emulation because of the overhead.

@mntmn Curious if there will be other keyboard layouts, or how hard this is for users to customize. The del key not being where I'm used to, and the shift keys being smaller and further away than I'm used too, are my main hesitations, but otherwise seems great!
@mntmn that thing is sexy. Custom linux distro?
@cienmilojos Debian with a tiny amount of customization
@mntmn @cienmilojos Do we get access to all not upstreamed patches? I would like to run openSUSE on it. :D

@mntmn Looking good. Does the chip include a TPM? Would also like to see a fingerprint sensor. But I can easily add that myself too. Can we use a internal USB connection to attach things? Directly via port or soldering.

Can you tell as a little bit more about the display? I dislike OLED for work. The non OLED panel is IPS I presume. How is the contrast ratio and color coverage?

Thanks!

@mntmn
Have you heard of Tyr?
A Rust replacement of Panthor.
I wonder how that would work on your systems.

@mntmn It looks super nice! Looking forward to getting one :)

(And also looking forward to seeing what the finished purple one will look like!)

@mntmn Gekauft! (Tatsächlich, Geld ist schon überwiesen!)
@mntmn One day, Austin. One day.
@mntmn we're you not tempted to go ortholinear? Did people not like it on the Pocket?
@Austin on pocket it makes sense because you have to relearn the layout anyway because of the much smaller-than normal size. on a full size kbd, most people can't deal with a lot of changes from traditional layouts.
@mntmn I understand, but is the MNT Reform Next for "most people"? 😝
@Austin it is for a wider audience than the classic MNT Reform yeah.
@mntmn Oh! Well, the beauty of open hardware means I can remake it as an ortholinear anyway so everyone's a winner.
@Austin @mntmn There were some efforts for the classic Reform in the MNT community, but they all seem to have died off. Maybe with Next the interest in developing more ergonomic options will be reignited?
