The thing about Macross Plus is it's ultimately like watching a two hour long Cowboy Bebop episode where I can't stand the two guys in the love triangle (and the space racism intersecting with real racist stuff in Guld's depiction is... very bad) but the weird surreal sf threat behind the relationship drama is a military conspiracy AI cult to bring about the Vocaloid Borg Collective and that's really funny.

also the music rules, hands down my favorite soundtrack in Macross to this point in a release order watchthrough of the franchise although Macross 7 could easily upend that

@gourd Chronological, as in, in-universe chronological? That's a cool idea...

I listened to the Macross Plus OST so many times, I love Yoko Kanno's compositions.

@heinragas Release order.

Otherwise it'd be like, 95% the same but we'd have watched Macross Zero first I think? I prefer release order so I can study how the franchise evolved over time.

If nothing else, it let me figure out that DYRL kiiinda draws Zentradi with elf ears by giving everyone pointy ears, and then Plus and Seven go all in on elf Zentradi. Which is something I dislike because OG Macross pointed out the Zentradi were just dudes. Some of which were very endearing dorks and not aggressive at all.

@gourd I guess they wanted to emphasize the alien-ness of the Zentraedi? But they're the same species, so that doesn't make a lot of sense.

@heinragas it is truly baffling

Like you're going to have some Zentradi who want to still fight, some are going to be dorks like the Blue Wind team (which Macross would have been better if the last few episodes were more about  ), and that's all social stuff. Although the perfect midpoint is the drummer in Macross 7 who is intensely dedicated to drumming. XD

That, and I'm absolutely convinced at least some rank and file Zentradi had like, jug bands or stuff and were just keeping it from the higher-ups pre-series. People invent "culture" on their own and Macross is kiiiinda weird about that in a very "we will defeat the communist Soviet Union by showing them rock music and blue jeans" way. It was the 80's.

this is before I start wondering how much gay romance was going on on the average Zentradi/Meltrandi ship and again kept on the down low, humans are pretty good at inventing sex from first principles

@heinragas other shocking reveal of the original Macross: realizing nobody on that show had a giant fetish

You absolutely would think that from the premise, but no, the Meltrandi barely shown up and Milla is micronized before she runs into anyone.

You have to wait for DYRL for the first person with that kink in DYRL Max.

@gourd There's a whole Thing in Frontier about it too!

@heinragas And apparently in one of the 7 OVAs!
