🌱 🇪🇺 The @[email protected]’s Ad hoc Multidisciplinary Group on the Environment #GME reconvenes this week - The session focuses on environmental rights and democracy. 👀 CIEL’s @[email protected] & @[email protected] will be joining the talks to ensure that #EnvironmentalJustice remains central. A 🧵
Environmental protection in Europe must be rooted in: ✊ #HumanRights, 🗣️ Democracy, and 🧑‍⚖️ The rule of law. CIEL & @[email protected] will be in Strasbourg 🇫🇷 continue to push for these principles to guide every step of the @[email protected]’s work on the environment.
In particular, we’ll monitor progress on the #EnvironmentStrategy. The Strategy is a chance to transform how Europe addresses environmental harm. BUT, implementation must be: 🔍Transparent ⚖️Rights-based 💺Inclusive to truly ensure a lasting impact for communities affected by environmental harm.
An increasingly urgent issue on the agenda: 🤓 #ClimateDisinformation 🤓 Why? Climate disinformation is undermining public debate and delaying action. That’s why we need strict, rights-respecting rules & the @[email protected] and its Member States have a key role to play.
When we talk about #Disinformation, the rule-of-law safeguards are KEY: they protect rights, support informed public debate, and improve State accountability. The @[email protected] must lead in setting standards that prevent disinformation while protecting freedom of expression and democratic space.
Beyond the #GME, the Council of Europe continues critical work at the intersection of human rights, democracy, and environmental protection. Our reminder: ⚓ Anchoring environmental governance in these core values remains indispensable for meaningful environmental action & to #MakePollutersPay.
Communities in Europe rely on the ECtHR’s env. judgments for protection. Few examples? ⚖️ #KlimaSeniorinnen v. Switzerland: inadequate climate action ⚖️ #CordellaVSItaly: industrial pollution causing systemic health risks ⚖️ #ÖneryıldızVSTurkey: State responsibility for deadly environmental hazards.
👉 These environmental cases & many more make States’ obligations clear — and they MUST be enforced 👈 But political will & resources are needed. We will keep exposing delays, demanding compliance, and defending people whose rights are violated by ecosystem collapse, climate inaction & toxic exposure.
The CoE & its institutions are making significant contributions to advance the rights of people across all 46 Member States to live in a #HealthyEnvironment. Let’s ensure we leave no one behind & apply the same protections to those living in non-metropolitan territories.
An overdue step: To truly protect people, @[email protected] must explicitly recognize the right to a #HealthyEnvironmentForAll. This is key to 🔑 Provide normative clarity 🔑 Strengthen existing jurisprudence 🔑 #PeopleOverProfit: Support those demanding protection from environmental & climate-related harms.
As the #GME meets this week, the CoE must promote a rights-based, accountable & people-centred approach to environmental protection across all its States and beyond — with strong civil society participation at every step 👣. Follow @[email protected] & @[email protected] for more insights!
