I run most of my games off an SD card and it’s been fine.
thingsiplayAs a secondary device to play games besides my big PC, yes. But lot of people have no other PC and the Steam Deck is the only device. Given that some games come at 100gb install size, and people want to install multiple games, 256gb can be low. I use internal space for Steam games and all stuff, and have an 512gb external card just for emulators and Roms.

Regrettable_incidentSteam deck is my only device. I have the 512 oled and am very happy with it. I know other people for whom it’s their only device, I don’t think it’s uncommon. Obviously we have phones, but either don’t need a computer or use one at work and don’t want one at home. Plus the steam deck is a linux computer in a pinch.
How good is the Oled? I’m bouncing between shelling out for it over the lcd.
Honestly, I don’t think there’s much difference. My mate has an LCD, deck, we’ve put them next to each other and they’re both good. Maybe the oled is a bit better in bright rooms. If price is an issue I think you’ll be fine with the LCD.
