Just heard about this signal group that was infiltrated by the FBI, but we don't know how yet, sounds likely that they had one of the peoples phones or computers or something so I I don't know how much concern is due here with signal directly

The FBI spied on a Signal group chat of immigration activists, records reveal

Exclusive: Agency accessed private conversations of New York ‘courtwatch’ group that was observing public hearings

@liaizon Not sure anything can be done here technologically. Just compartmentalizing information I guess. Of course nothing this group was doing sounds illegal so
@liaizon With "SignalGate" you could at least argue the software should make it clearer who else is in a room with you. Nothing you can do software-wise about a different human sitting behind a trusted device
@liaizon most likely they infiltrated it the old fashioned way by making their way into a group
@liaizon good ole social engineering

@liaizon

Or they arrested someone with the group and forced that person to give login information.

@liaizon hmm… I guess one thing you could ask from signal is to check if all people in a group have a signal PIN, to ensure one can’t add new devices via sim swapping an existing user.

(Idk iff the pin is still optional. It was when I started using it)

@cryptix

@liaizon

Most people on Signal use a pin, I keeps asking me for mine and alerts about safety # changes.. but yes, another way to secure the group is as you said.

@cryptix I just heard that the group had 1000 members so lol they probably just joined as a rando account and no one noticed
