Read somewhere that Americans wear clothing items on average 7 times before tossing them (no idea how accurate) but if I don't wear any given clothing regularly for a minimum of a decade I feel like I'm the world's most wasteful person. Honestly did not realize I was that far off norm? Anyone else?
@ethanschoonover I wear until they're two sizes old or they have damage from 100s of wash cycles

@ethanschoonover

considering the garbage fast fashion churns out, it’s a miracle if it lasts 7 wash cycles

(also cycles right back to Vime’s boots theory)

@ethanschoonover I have shirts that were purchased because they looked vintage. They are now vintage.
@ethanschoonover I wear stuff until my wife refuses to let me leave the house wearing it. Dammit, that was my favorite Carhartt T shirt!
@ethanschoonover I have my high rotation clothes. Tshirts, undershirts/wear, socks, shorts/pants. They get washed weekly. Then I have stuff in the closet, worn a couple times a year, or every couple of years. I should see if some of them still fit.
@ethanschoonover I think everything I'm currently wearing (minus the Apple Watch) is from ~8 years ago? I have about 6-7 pairs of pants I wear regularly, so just between those, I've probably put hundreds of wears at this point on the oldest ones?
@ethanschoonover
On the light side of the average may be "I bought it online and it's just not working the moment I try it on" or "this was a gift and no"
@ethanschoonover Usually after I wash it, I think this item has too many holes in it to keep it

@ethanschoonover I’m just glad it’s soon Christmas because my stash of socks is growing thin.

I still wear a T-shir I grabbed in Amsterdam in 2008!

@ethanschoonover I have a GoreTex parka that is about 40 years old. Got it as a teenager, still fits, still fine (although not completely waterproof anymore).
@ethanschoonover this might be an extremely gender-correlated statistic…
@jonmsterling if for no other reason than marketing, I’d say almost certainly. I’m just amazed by the concept of cycling through clothes this fast, though.

@ethanschoonover yeah… When I found out that women (*) attack each other for wearing the same thing twice (not in a row, just twice period) I was really shocked…

(Not all, thank god lmao)

@ethanschoonover As long as there is enough fabric left to hold the garment together around the holes, I'm still wearing it. Literally.
@ethanschoonover You're clearly not alone based on the comments. We're the same (lumping me, my wife, and kids into "we"). We try to buy for quality and comfort, then keep and use for years. And it _is_ encouraging to see the habit has stuck in our kids.
