Been enjoying exploring the world and figuring out a lot myself, but there were also quite a few places where I still got stuck.
Overall encounter rate was BONKERS, ended up looking up maps to the dungeons cuz screw wandering around the entire dungeon with that many fights.
Balancing toward the end sucked, spent an afternoon grinding from level 30 -> 40 to tackle the last area.
I know DQ2 was an NES RPG, but towards the end I was getting annoyed that there wasn't much agency in character growth. Makes me want to go back to the SNES Final Fantasy games, like FF5. Or heck even FF2.
I mostly enjoyed the exploration, and it did feel good when I figured things out on my own. But then it also would feel bad when there were untelegraphed invisible walls to find to progress the game.
Time spent on these games until beating the boss:
DQ1: About 8 hours
DQ2: About 15 hours
DQ3: About 30 hours
This includes a bunch of grinding, though.
Dang, one of the reasons I can play thru these pretty easily is because I can play them in portrait mode on my phone. Makes it easy to grind while watching TV, or just fill a little time here and there.
Looks like the FF3 3D remake, the FF5 Pixel Remaster, and the FF6 weird old mobile version I have all play in landscape only. :(
