Arabic numerals 1235467890 replaced Roman numerals I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX a few centuries ago.

The Roman system isn't sane as it has no place value or numeric base. Not decimal.
So the ancient Romans really did arithmetic with decimal numbers on an abacus and transcribed the result.
The actual symbols used in Arabic are not the same as Western symbols, but similar. The system is the same.

Maybe the USA should use Metric. A system invented by French and upgraded by British. Unlike Imperial/Customary units it's also decimal.
