New tech is exciting, but constant upgrading comes with a cost. Replacing devices early increases e-waste, hurts the environment, and squanders valuable materials. The most sustainable device is the one you already own. Repair it, maintain it, and keep it running longer. Your wallet benefits, and so does the planet.

Before you do your Black Friday shopping, watch Buy Now! on @Netflix and learn more about the overconsumption problem.

@iFixit @Netflix thanks for sharing! It gets on my list when I consume Netflix for a month before I cancel it for another year 😉.

@iFixit @Netflix "...constant upgrading comes with a cost."

The "right" way for upgrading to happen: In the 80s, when Apple released a new computer they offered the new machine as an upgrade to your old one. Swap out the main board and you were on your way.

Why can't tech be modular like this again?

@iFixit @Netflix I wish manufacturers facilitated this by supplying security updates to devices for WAY longer than they do now. I'm sure that more people would use more older technology if the device wasn't a radioactive hazard to even be on the same network as modern devices. Imagine a world where manufacturers were required to release their products under a free software license after they no longer supported the product.
