I installed Arch Linux to a slow $10.29/year VPS along with GUI without using the installer.

You could have done it for free and easier if you used Oracle Cloud’s free tier and netboot.xyz

netboot.xyz/docs/kb/providers/oci

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure | netboot.xyz

Using netboot.xyz on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

I’ve heard Oracle just randomly cancels these accounts.

Can confirm.

I tried to use them for my first Lemmy instance. One day I’m just banned and there is absolutely no way to recover.

Had mine for years at this point. No such problem.

They reclaim unused computes and this can be based on % utilization so just keeping it on 24/7 isn’t enough. Something to be aware of if you jump for the better computes. You can convert to pay-as-you go to prevent them from reclaiming the compute. Under PAYG you still get the always-free resources but if you pay for any overages so the devil is in the details.

And even if you do everything right then yeah they will just randomly straight up disappear your instance which includes any oracle backups.

So if you use them my best advice is absolutely use 3-2-1 backup strategy and enjoy the free resources while they last

Friends don’t let friends use Oracle.
B…but it works!
Until the day it doesn’t, I was one of those people excommunicated by Oracle and that is the last I ever heard from them (seriously, I tried to find out why at least)
Yeah, normally. But I will use their generous free tier at their expense.
…ok? This is how cloud works.
