I just found out that iOS already has this feature, but the way in which you enable it is quite hidden. In the Settings app, go to the settings for Mail, then change ‘Mark Message as Read’ to ‘Immediately’.

@jeffreykuiken Thats a really nebulous setting, like what is "default", what is "never"? Like does it just not automatically mark them when viewed? Does the default just "sometimes" mark them read?
