current project: MUSIC EDITOR

i'm trying my best at writing a piano roll with a couple built-in synths!

it sorta sucks right now and is hella ugly. but i've been making it more cosy by the day, and today i managed to write my first lil song in it!!

one thing that comes to mind every single time i sit down and do this project is just how much work is required to get something like this to function.

i added a loop region today, but it's incredibly easy to misclick the timeline and screw up your loop region—so i'll probably have to rework its UX.

while working on this song, i've noticed just how many features of Bitwig Studio i take for granted. like the ability to double-click on the timeline to start playback from a given point. this lil editor doesn't have that, and it's a real pain to work with because of that!

there's also no copy-paste, so despite the two halves of the song being mostly the same, i had to write in all the notes manually. which was kind of annoying, because one of my explicit limitations is that i don't wanna have any form of snapping, to make songs sound less robotic!

the instrument itself is very primitive, too! it's basically just a single poorly antialiased oscillator, with no ADSR or even some primitive declicking. you can hear very faint clicks at the ends of notes if you listen closely.
not to mention a glaring bug in the audio engine: pausing playback stops the instrument entirely until you unpause. the notes may stop playing while playback is paused, but they'll also resume from the same state once you unpause! even if you seeked to an earlier part of the song. which usually results in an annoying cacophony of dissonant notes.
that'll need fixing…!

Wow, really cool start though. Would want to know how far it goes!

@cadenwolfgang feel free to follow me for updates!

at the moment it's pretty much just what you see in the video, haha. i lowkey wanna make it good enough to write an album with it, but the primary goal is to just have some fun with writing music and digital instruments—so nothing too specific ^

@riki

Ooo yes, making a track with your own DAW is cool.
