No, getting a cheek swab is just for the part where they find out if the cells match. If you stop at that point, no-one's life is gonna be saved by it :-)

I was curious about what exactly is involved in donation, so I looked it up. Seems like the simpler method is to take a growth factor drug for a few days and spend a few hours hooked up for intravenous collection:
