Only a few months ago, Google announced it was going to require that all Android applications - even those installed outside of the Play Store - had to be verified. This led to a massive backlash, and it seems our protests and complaints have had effect:

@osnews "Google cancels plans" seems clickbait-y. They didn't cancel their plans, they backed down *slightly* until the backlash subsides, then will probably reintroduce it later

@osnews you are correct, clickbait was not the right word choice.

the rest of my reply still stands. "Google cancels plans" makes it sound like developer verification has been canceled, when in reality it's still coming into existence and will have a major effect on app developers and their users
