Ok, so I have this Anne of Green Gables theory…

… and that’s that her birth name was originally spelled “Ann Shirley”

Here’s what she says to Marilla: “But if you call me Anne please call me Anne spelled with an E.”

Note that she doesn’t say her name IS spelled with an E, she *asks* Marilla to say Anne with an E. And this is the same girl who moments before asked to be called Cordelia.

So I don’t think it’s clear from the text that Anne is her given birth spelling, and it’s totally possible that she became Anne for the first time at Green Gables

I never once assumed that her birth spelling included an "e". I suppose it's possible, but she's a character who delights in the world of fantasy. It seems unlikely to me.
