i should make a list of tricky metaphors to translate - 点・線・面 is going right in there. a zero-dimensional point expanding into a one-dimensional line and then a two-dimensional plane evokes a vivid image, but stopping at two dimensions can make the metaphor fall flat in english (sorry!!)
