chat I'm looking for keywords/solutions for something 3D printable.
I want to to make a panel with buttons, switches, connectors, ... but I don't want to design it from scratch.
what are these things called? what is already out there?

more details:
imagine the modularity an AV/server-rack, but instead of one <thing> per height, I'm looking at one HU that contains multiple <things>. "like keystone?" yes exactly! just more compact.
I imagine a box where 2 sides are just slots for custom covers

since I dropped using Fusion360, I also dropped the ability to 3D-model anything because I can't get my brain to learn how to use blender/freecad/... v_v

possibility: mount DIN rail, print clips that attach to it, then any box I find can be a "module"

heck, I'd design that box in the slicer directly

with that in mind, any box with a hole in it would work, they can just be attached next to each other

re: DIN Rail
something like this would work in that case: https://www.printables.com/model/849182-din-rail-box

it's still somewhat bulky, and not aesthetically pleasing

also, shame on me, I don't have a DIN rail laying around at the moment v_v

I could just make it small boxes that attach to each other, maybe via some long screw

takes 3 primitives and some dimensional juggling to create a thing that can take 30*3*Xmm covers
should be enough for now so I can glue some things together to get a feeling for it

@xenontechs

DIN rails, on the other hand, are something you can easily print!

@xenontechs

Finding circuit breakers for din rails will be a no brainer.

@7heo yeah but also bulky and expensive. a case in that volume to put some holes/buttons/connectors in, that would work tho. but that's oddly specific
@xenontechs
Uhhhh... hmmm... what is a macro pad or a button box?

@jibi2k "button box" is the correct direction, it's just hard to find something modular
"macro pad"s are very specific

I need something more "here's a frame, slide in that cover*"

*sheet of plastic where I drilled 2 holes to insert switches

@xenontechs

so then a blank faceplate where you can drill your holes and some printable rack which you slide those into like

@jibi2k yes, but smaller and sideways.
like, one faceplate is 3cm high and variable (less than 5cm) in width

@xenontechs
yeah ok i see. i think thats not happening ootb. i have never seen that for a good reason probably...

There are gridfinity baseplates that you can probably modify for your purpose

Make it rectangular remove the center strut and then you can clip variable width faceplates top to bottom.
