Usually the sulphur-crested cockatoos are the noisiest birds around but during the warmer months the eastern koels arrive and turn it up to 11!

@Vandacorp F***ing koels! I had one nesting in a tree next door when I lived in Narrabundah. Started squawking at about 2am and never stopped.
And, yes, they make sulphur-crested cockatoos seem quiet by comparison.
@tooheymatthew @Vandacorp Lol, what I'd give to have a koel outside my window!

I’d not heard of them before.

@Susan60 @tooheymatthew @Vandacorp They are slowly working their way south (climate change?), we've only had them in Canberra for about a decade. You may get them down there if you live long enough!

@sister_ratched @tooheymatthew @Vandacorp

We never used to have currawongs down here. I used to delight in their song as a kid when we visited friends in Sydney. In the last few years they’ve become common here. Definitely climate change.

@sister_ratched @tooheymatthew @Vandacorp

And I’m afraid I won’t have to live much longer to see them down here, just a few years maybe. OTOH, the weather here the last year or so, & especially the last few weeks, has me thinking that climate change might affect us quite differently down here. After a fairly dry winter & lots of sun (while NSW & QLD had lots of rain), we’re having a very wet spring. And while we have had a few unseasonably warm days, the nights have mostly continued to be rather cool. Will have to check figures to see whether my perceptions are accurate.

@sister_ratched @tooheymatthew @Vandacorp you say that now. But having a koel outside your window at 3am isn't the picnic you might imagine.

Still, it beats having a pair of channel-billed cuckoos similarly placed. 🙉
