Does anybody know of grants that could help support a Europe-based PhD student doing research on satellite pollution? This student currently has no funding and needs it badly to keep doing excellent (and much-needed) research work. I'm not Europe-based so I'm just not aware of what funding sources are available.
I have not grant insights but have been reporting on the field for years and know a few researchers. Which part of the field might be interesting - lab work, simulation, atmospheric science, astronomy?
@sundogplanets In which country in Europe is said person based?
@hweimer They're mostly looking for grants that are Europe-wide, have already exhausted the grant possibilities in their country
@sundogplanets @hweimer there just is little to none Europe wide funding opportunity for this career stage. EU grants usually go to large scale cooperations. Funding for PhD level, single grant, usually applied for by the resident PI, is available by national agencies or foundations.

@sundogplanets

Maybe @kappazeta has some experience on PhD grants in Europe.

@GustavinoBevilacqua
not much, actually, since my PhD was indirectly funded by a full-time teaching contract that I had at the same time. It also depends a lot on the country, but a good start for EU funding can be this page: https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/home. Then I suggest to check also government funding pages for the country the student lives in (usually the ministry of education/university).
@sundogplanets
@sundogplanets this is going to be highly country-dependent (it's a bit like asking for Nortg American grants, US and Canada landscapes are very different). Where is this person based?

@sundogplanets there isn't much for individual students - EU does have PhD networks https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/doctoral-networks , but those are larger things to be applied for by a network of advisors. Esa has co-funding for PhDs, but that's explicitly co-funding https://www.esa.int/About_Us/Careers_at_ESA/ESA_Co-funded_Research
Individual funding is typically country by country.

@sundogplanets They should check out Horizon Europe. They have a number of programs for students.
@sundogplanets A lot of funding sources are national, therefore depending in where the person ist based or willing to move. Eurodoc could be a good source for infos and contacts - it's an umbrella organization of national PhD and PostDoc associations across Europe with a bunch of amazing people. www.eurodoc.net @eurodoc unfortunately no Mastodon account

@sundogplanets I saw this today: https://www.campusfrance.org/fr/le-programme-de-bourses-france-excellence-eiffel They would need to get in touch with someone at a university though.

(and this for post-doc positions which I don't think are applicable: https://www.campusfrance.org/fr/actu/programme-mopga-ouverture-d-un-nouvel-appel-a-candidatures)
