I feel like this is the place to ask, what is the best option for self hosted storage that will give me a roughly G Drive / G Photos solution?
@reece i'm using nextcloud but looking to try alternatives. for images, immich is the big name, and seafile is a (non-free) nextcloud alternative.
@ikesau Any particular reason you're looking for alts?
@reece I'm in the process of building up my own 3-2-1 homeserver and so I just want to get some experience with other options.

it's been very good on the whole, but i've had a few buggy experiences and its UX leaves something to be desired.
@reece @ikesau
In my experience and everyone else I know that self hosts it, nextcloud is slow, surprisingly resource intensive, and fragile feeling. They have a whole ecosystem of plugins so you can extend its functionality but many are half baked or broken. I also recommend looking elsewhere.

Syncthing for file sync is the best bet. I'm happy with it. But it's not a gdrive alt.

github.com/opencloud-eu might be okay. It looks promising, but I haven't personally used it.

Immich looks like the best for photos only, but also haven't personally used.

@reece @ikesau as someone who's gone through that same journey, the photo "apps" on nextcloud are nowhere near as good as g photos. Immich (which only recently came out of beta) is a missing some minor features still but it's a much closer replacement.
