I took my mom to Joshua Tree today, her first time ever and she absolutely loved it. The employees at the entry points were incredibly nice and chatty, it’s frustrating that the government shutdown has tied their hands but they’re really making the best of it.

@averyvine That’s awesome! I’d head in from the west entrance near the visitor’s center and check out the stops along the way like Quail Springs, but for me the main attraction is Hidden Valley/Intersection Rock (they’re on opposite sides of the road). Further down, the Cholla cactus garden is cool but it’s a bit further east and I’ve never been past that.
