Why are British people, who are usually against racial slurs, okay with slurs that are class-based, such as "chav"? - Lemmy.World

I learned a new word, and it turns out the word is a slur for a person who is working class. That seems very nasty, considering that statistically speaking, working class people are the majority of Britain. Most British people I know online are against racial slurs yet throw around the slur “chav” like it’s nothing. Why?

Chav -

“A person in Britain of a type stereotypically known for engaging in aggressively loutish behavior especially when in groups and for wearing flashy jewelry and athletic casual clothing (such as tracksuits and baseball caps)”

That is a more accurate description, class isn’t really anything to do with it, it is more about the behaviour, attitude and style.

Has the meaning since changed? When I look up the term, I mostly get pages saying it’s a classist insult towards the working class, which is quite different from your description.
Has the meaning changed? I always knew CHAV as Council Housing, Aggressive and Violent
