100 euro fines in Ireland; proposed 1,000 pound fines in the UK. Let's keep that momentum going! Phone sounds in public are my number one pet peeve. https://www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2025/1030/1540979-headphone-dodgers-bare-beating-sodcasting-people-not-using-headphones-on-public-transport/
@Aaronvegh Sounds like the rich get to be assholes with little to no worry
@sean they generally take public transit much? @Aaronvegh
@lettosprey good point---still though, fines typically just mean a punishment for being poor, unfortunately. At least that's how they work out here in the States.

@sean Finland had a good system, until it was found not "legal"

Your fine was calculated based on your financial situation.

Apparently a well paid ice hockey player got a very, very high fine for speeding...

@lettosprey That's the right way to do a fine---but this article here just says a static 100 euro fine. Just puts people like Tim Cook when he visits Ireland for some tax work in a complete different tier this way :\

@sean Yah, it was rather unique in Finland, and even they seem to have gotten rid of it.

The rich vs poor divide is not _as_ prominent in most of Europe as it is in the US (though the UK is really doing their best to become like the US), so it does not hit quite as unfair as there, but yah, there has been some not-nice incidents here too.

@Aaronvegh I have told several people off.

But still, it doesn't come close to the annoyance of people smoking at the train stations, despite everyone knowing it isn't legal. But there are no reactions, so why should they care :/
