Biking in this morning I thought about all the evils we've fought back that people might not remember:

we stopped the ozone hole
we stopped acid rain
we defeated Y2K
we improved the air in many US and EU metros
we cleaned up US rivers substantially
we reduced childhood mortality
we saved countless people from cancers with early detection, smoking cessation, vaccines
we exterminated smallpox
we're close on guinea worm
