I committed the unforgivable sin of coughing while walking around K. His lashing out succeeded in spinning his chair tray right into my pint+ mug of coffee, full of my morning mix: strong coffee with a hefty dose of fiber and milk. It flew just far enough to dump its contents all across my laptop and the general clutter around it.

Psyllium is sticky. That seems to have slowed the coffee soaking into the keyboard, so frantic response may have saved me.

My chill, OTOH, is entirely trashed

I was wrong. Looks like the laptop is dead.
Fortunately, I have a desktop too: bigger, faster, newer.

But, I kinda need a laptop. Not frequently and maybe even never again in practice, but lacking one would be immediately inconvenient.

Pondering whether to do a direct replacement for <$500 (OWC has a refurb identical to my existing 7yo one) or to buy a new machine for >3x that which would likely be my last laptop.

OR, I could just walk out into Lake St. Clair until I no longer care.

SWMBO is an enabler. She refuses to tell me to just swap for the refurb or attempt to repair the old one because she bought it for me* and hence it has sentimental value. Wife[-1] would never...

And I’ve reached a point where I don't NEED to make the cheap choice. OTOH, what about my tendency to make K freak out makes me deserve a new laptop?

Also, WTF is Apple doing with RAM? Why can’t I get a modest CPU with big memory??? Assholes.

*: After spilling a lethal glass of water on my old one

Salient point: the new MBP I may get would be the least expensive computer I've ever bought in nominal dollars. I spent more on a machine >25ya when I was making 2/5 the salary and the dollars were more valuable.

OTOH, I definitely should not be rewarded for coughing in the same room as K, which I know is practically begging for chaos. He's been that way for 25y. I should know better.

(were he a competent adult, obviously it would be his responsibility, but he's a toddler with a beard.)

"He hurts me because I am bad" really isn't a good look, is it?

It is what it is.
