As an Alberta parent with a child in elementary school, I’m both relieved and heartbroken with the passing of Bill 2. Getting kids back in class is everyone’s goal, but this “solution” comes at a cost.
#AbEd #Bill2My child’s classroom should be a place of joy and discovery. But forcing a contract on teachers, ignoring their cries about class sizes and support? How can I expect my kid to be taught by demoralized educators?
This may not end a crisis; rather, it might just create a simmering one.
Using the notwithstanding clause to strip away Charter rights is a dangerous game. Sets a dangerous precedent. Guess who decides when to use this? Who has the oversight?
What am I supposed to tell my child? That our fundamental freedoms can be suspended when they're inconvenient? This sets a chilling precedent that could affect their future.
The wage increase is a welcome step. My lingering concern is whether this truly addresses the underlying challenges of classroom sizes and the need for support staff. This should be the start of a deeper conversation, not the end of one.
Slapping heavy fines on teachers or the ATA ($500/day per teacher, up to $500K/day for ATA) for non-compliance feels punitive. It sets a dangerous precedent for suspending rights in labour disputes.
As a parent, my biggest wish is for collaboration. Our children deserve a system where everyone is working together, not against each other. What disheartens me most is that the teachers lost 3 weeks of pay. Was this bill designed to silence us all?
