Avez-vous acheté des œufs américains lors de votre dernière épicerie?

Vous n’êtes pas les seuls à avoir sursauté devant un logo de l’USDA au lieu d’une petite feuille d’érable, la semaine dernière.

@EdwinG Wait, what?! I thought they had a shortage, and can we talk about testing for diseases?

@SnowyCA Agree with you.

So… it would seem we have a minimum quantity under CUSMA to import (that’s what the article implies). And our importers are hedging their H5N1 bets.

As consumers, it’s up to us to let them know that we are not interested by not buying them.

P.S.: I think the shortage was temporarily fixed for the summer.

@SnowyCA @EdwinG Unlike the US, Canada has pretty tightly planned capacity, that is why they accepted a small amount of import in CUSMA. It allows them to import with no tarrifs when planned production is not enough and it avoids over production and waste the rest of the time. Usually that import is used for transformation so we don't really see it. Even at the height of the crisis in the US, small quantities were occasionally imported to fill gaps.
I am not shocked by it. We used to be allies.

@EdwinG Informative article. In other words, US exports can co-exist with Canadian supply management.

Seems like a win-win.

@JohnnieMac It’s always been the case.

@EdwinG "Nice eggs you have there Galen - shame if something happened to them."

The other day at Loblaws, most of the stacks of eggs were damaged at one side, as if they had forced onto the shelves. I assume Loblaws have a high tolerance of goods getting damaged on the shelves.
