The logo on the right is for Omarchy, an Arch derivative.
I use poop emoji, btw
So, a link to the author’s page, merch, and barely any text explaining what it is on he front page. That’s a hell fucking no what the fuck for me.
Because Omarchy is put together by a pile of shit (DHH) and it’s a derivative of Arch.
So, cooking Arch with a pile of shit you get Omarchy.
Why is DHH a pile of shit? I see this echoed a lot and I’m not familiar with his history beyond his hey and basecamp infrastructure stories after his spat with Apple.
As far as I can tell his takes are fine in that regard. I’m assuming his motivations for his troubles with apple aren’t altruistic in nature, at least not purely, but I don’t expect any businessman to be in any regard.
I’m genuinely curious, I’d love to learn more.
I ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THOSE BASTARDS GODDAMNIT!!!
WHY DO YOU THINK I’M TYPING IN CAPITALS WITH THREE EXCLAMATION MARKS OR INTERROBANGS AFTER EACH SENTENCE‽‽‽
Well here you can find some usefull info: The Ruby community has a DHH problem
Hope this helps
From what I gather, the only thing they’ve got going for them is that they’re actually contacting key people to try out the distro, as well as timing that campaign to coincide with the EOL of Win10.
But yeah, so annoying to see when there’s so many better alternatives by better people out there.
As for the latter, I haven’t confirmed this myself, but I’ve been hearing that there’s a lot of curling into bash going on, so yeah.
curling into bash
I don’t think that’s how that works.
I think they mean usingbcurl to grab something and piping the output to bash so it it executed locally.
And it is pretty common. Things like ohmyzsh use it. I find it scary because you’re running things direct from the web without any package signature architecture. I would trust the omz people but what if their GitHub was compromised? But don’t check any of the source? No. I don’t anyway, but with a bit of fear :/
Even if you check, you should download with curl and check the downloaded file, then run that, as a malicious server could present a normal download to browsers based on user agent and other fingerprinting data, while presenting a malicious script to curl
Wish people would stop suggesting the pipe to bash scripts as an install method but the simplicity of being able to tell all Linux and Mac users to just paste a string into their terminal to install and letting the script deal with any differences between systems is probably why we keep seeing it for major projects, rather than a long list of instructions for different distros
Not sure why exactly, but if I had to guess it’s probably a lack of marketing people in the FOSS world in general.
Recently I’ve only really seen recently the End of 10 campaign from the KDE folks gaining a bit of traction, but even that’s more vaguely pointing in the direction of Linux than anything.

Other FOSS people don’t tend to get loads of money from Cloudflare or all this attention for what’s not even that interesting a project.
The Ladybird project is also run by someone who’s said some bad things but it hasn’t exploded in popularity or received 6 figures in corporate donations. Something feels off about this Omarchy hype… like, the product isn’t even that amazing, so the only thing I imagine could explain this difference is that it’s DHH doing it.
I will see people do this for other FLOSS developers, and I think it’s bad in those cases too. I don’t want to name them because I feel like that’s not worth the effort and frankly we shouldn’t give any attention to complaints about a dev’s personal opinions or character.
By contrast, I respect the critiques of his actual software, which mostly seem to be fair. I do wonder how much people would even be looking into it if they didn’t have strong opinions about his opinions, but as long as it’s accurate that’s what matters.
Dhh has bad politics.
Ok? Whatever. Btw, is there a tiling wm that has stapling; multiple windows in the same tile?
