I was driving across the Desert Road earlier in the week and heard this piece on how road safety workers are being abused and even deliberately struck by rage-filled entitled car wielders.

A thought: Maybe we could give them a tracking substance that is painted onto their clothing, and if they get struck by a vehicle, a hard-to-remove tracer can be detected after the fact, and the driver never gets to sit behind the wheel again.*

*This is a climbdown from the first reaction I had, which was to strap them to a road cone bolted to the centre line of a busy highway and let them spend a day with cars careening past them at 100...then losing their licence permanently.

Roadworkers report being abused - verbally and physically - by frustrated drivers

Nearly two-thirds of roadworkers were verbally abused on a weekly basis, while one in five had been physically assaulted, a survey shows.

RNZ

Stocks were invented for people like this. Trail cameras at every road works, breaking the social contract earns a few days in the stocks plus permanent loss of license.

We need to make an example of these ignorant pricks.

Half of me is going "YES!!!!!" There's another part that goes "aren't you one of those radicals wth a commitment to transformative justice?"
@phil_stevens
@RedRobyn @BobLefridge @phil_stevens another application for my "cyclesafe limpet mine". It's magnetic and so if a vehicle comes too close (or you lob it) it sticks. You then let them get a safe distance before triggering an exploding dye sack to indicate your displeasure and mark that vehicle as unsafe. If the driver of said vehicle remonstrates violently your second trigger blows the whole thing up.

The harder version of my boxing glove on a spring loaded extendable arm that slaps a sticky note with the rule and roadcode regarding safe passing manoeuvres on cars that come too close

@RedRobyn @Niall @BobLefridge @phil_stevens all lovely ideas, but the trouble is that the next time that driver sees you they might be behind you and you would not know what hit you.
@frstep @RedRobyn @Niall @BobLefridge The only way this works is for them to become ex drivers.
@frstep yes indeed. Front and rear cams would only be useful to the coroner. Thing is though the idea of @RedRobyn isn't actually offensive but would be about as well received as mine. Tactical airstrikes are the only solution. @BobLefridge @phil_stevens
@frstep
Today's most egregiously close pass yelled "Queer cunt" pretty loud, so I might hear them coming next time too. But you are pretty convincing. Limpetmine it is then
