James Kochalka (who I don't think is on Fedi) had a technique that he would demo when doing presentations to kids, where you draw an irregular shape (ideally rounded, but it doesn't have to be), then add details to anthropomorphize it. He gave his "Johnny Boo" character (https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/series/JBO/johnny-boo/) as an example, but in the diary comic where he mentioned it, he also showed a few others.

I'll try to find it a bit later, and will edit this post to add it; he scrubbed his American Elf diary series from the web years ago, going to a subscription (and now Patreon, I think?) model, but I have the physical books, but it'll take a while to find it, as they're pretty hefty.
