Maybe because there are still people who are not tired of Call of Duty, liked the predecessor and are still looking forward for a sequel and play it with their friends?

Oh wait, this isn’t even the newest CoD? Probably they just forgot to update the prices. Probably forgot it even exists because there is a new one.

Didn't forget, they just want full price forever.
Nintendo Intensifies
They dont want people buying the old games, even their 15 year old ones are still full price on purpose. They want you in the latest game each year, exposed to all the predatory extra-transactions, then they want you to do that again the next year and the next and the next...

Take a look at the reviews, and find this insanity on the top:

need to be connected to online services even when you just want to play singleplayer campaign, and keep getting connection errors.

Thanks, I’m out.

So in theory.. you can not even play single-player campaign because of kernel level anti-cheat + internet connection. Even if Wine/Proton would allow you to start the game.
True. According to protondb, it is not possible to even start the game.
What a shame. But to be expected..
My pirate hat says otherwise
Until the support stops and you have an unplayable game in your library.
this means it will be lost to time once they turn the server off

Bad but

Also

Stupid

You are missing the most important issue. It only runs on Windows!

To be fair that icon doesn’t mean much of anything cuz you can just force compatibility in Linux and use proton, you just gotta manually do that in properties.

This is probably windows only because of kernel level anticheat though so it probably still holds up.

I haven‘t encountered a Steam game that doesn‘t run on Linux so far. They very likely exist but anti cheat, third party account requirements, or an online connection while playing don‘t have anything to do with it as far as my games go. Same goes for GOG, Amazon Games and Epic Games on Heroic launcher. It just works as far as I can tell.

You are lucky then. If you play lots of multiplayer games you are bound to encounter one that doesn’t work.

Most modern Call of Duty and Battlefield games do not work for example.

According to areweanticheatyet.com only 40% of Games with Anti cheat work on Linux…

Are We Anti-Cheat Yet?

It would never occur to me to install CoD or Battlefield in the year 2025. So yeah, Guess I am lucky for having standards. Hopefully more people will realize there are other fantastic multiplayer games out there that run on a Steamdeck for example.
What computers and airconditioners have in common is that they become useless when you open windows.
I suppose we just have to hope the air conditioner doesn't suddenly hit us with a BSOD!
Or AI integration and ads
I'm pretty sure they do already have AI integration on the latest models..
Wtf with what reason xD The whole AI integration into basic things supposed to do basic things is stupidness of a dystopian degree. A bed with AI? It’s just a mattress. Why, just why. An AC just needs to cool to a certain temp. Why does it need AI, to get a relationship with it? What’s next, tables with AI?
Play Necesse or Abiotic Factor. Both just left early access recently and are great real games for good prices and aren’t stuffed with the modern AAA bloat
Ravenfield
Been oogling necesse. Would’ve loved couch co-op with the kids. On a scale of 1 to terraria, how much do you enjoy it?
It’s a bit more basebuildy than Terraria which I actually prefer as someone who enjoys rimworld. It’s pretty big on boss fights tho, but i usually leave that to my friends and focus on the base. It has a lot of polish and quality-of-life features. I’ve sunk about 140 hours into it so far but I’ll probably rack up a lot more than that. It isn’t very replayable and has a weak endgame loop, but it’s a very solid game.
This kind of thing is why I dont get excited for steam sales now. Oh, 50% off Recent AAA Game? Haha, yeah, half off the base price, but the entire game is DLC now and each of those is still full price, and there’s a dozen of them.

AAA is just cash grab, they haven't been good or innovative games for a long, long time now. They are very good at marketing to the masses though and they have the pricing tiers laid out perfectly to extract as much money from people as they can.

They start off with their massive price tag like $70-80, plus the deluxe editions for $100-120 for any suckers who want a fucking extra skin. Then after a couple months when sales slow down, they put it on sale for like 20% off, then a couple months more, its like 40% off and so on. DLC has kind of fallen off, as they get people stuck in the battle pass and cosmetic buying loop instead (people are crazy).

If a AAA game looks interesting to you at all, you are literally best just waiting a few months or more, it's a win-win, you either buy it it's actual value or you get the reviews that its a disgusting broken mess or was completely over-hyped (it's these last two 99% of the time).

I got it on sale for 10 bucks last year. Great SP. Lots of fun.
That’s why I pirate. Even 10 bucks is too much money for these companies exploiting their customers. The only “downside” is no multiplayer. But I only care about single-player anyway :)
Just nabbed Necesse now that it’s out of early access; looking forward to playing with my kiddos :)
Buy the Call of Duty Warchest for $30 and play CoDUO with us. The best part about PC games is that you can still play the classics online!

I’ve always wondered what all the CoD or Battlefield games have that’s different between the versions? 😅 Because to me it’s just a bunch of people running around shooting each other in the exact same way. I can’t, at a glance, tell you which game or version it is, if I stumble upon someone playing it.

Same with the football, basketball, and American football games. Which version is it? Have the rules of the sport changed between years? 😂 Who knows!

On the other hand, I love survival crafting games, and with the indies you rarely tell them apart because they all look the same. 😂 So I shouldn’t speak.

The graphics. You need the newer game to be able to play with the rest because they have the newer version, and you want the newer version for the better graphics, but to be able to run it properly you need to buy the high end GPU’s. If yo don’t, you’re a loser, a sad poor person, because everyone else has it and you don’t. So you throw away more money to something completely shit. And children are very easy to catch in this scam.
I want a Call of Doody game where you're running around downtown of a major city looking for a public bathroom while prairie dogging a big old shit kind of like Far Cry 2's malaria mechanic.
This is the way.
With CoD BO3 extensive ability to be modded and workshop support, it could be theoretically possible.
I’ll support anyone who references Far Cry 2’s malaria mechanic. A game ahead of its time…
I want to see a game where you have to pay rent on a server and you need to spend all of your time working to make in game currency to pay the rent otherwise you’re kicked out. But when you’re sick and can’t play, they will kick you out anyways. And the rent keeps getting up, but the monthly income does not. And when you need customer support they put you on a waiting list and when it’s your turn they say “wrong department, we’re putting you on another waiting list” so you will never get the mental help you need. Yeah, I would definitely play that game, I know I’m good at it.
I wish Steam would put the 3rd-party requirements nice and obvious above the buy button. Along with a "uses AI content" and "always online requirement" banners too.
That’s why pirating AAA games is morally justified.
Modern Warfare was peak CoD
Which one? Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), Modern Warfare 2 (2009), Modern Warfare 3 (2011), Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare II (2022), or Modern Warfare III (2023)?
2007 but 2009 was good too
Thats the neat part, just dont.
If you still play CoD nowadays then you are actively supporting the problem.

From time to time I’ll still look at their steam page during sales, because I’d like to play a blockbuster FPS where I can mindlessly mow down bad guys, with good story and production value.

But the price point and reviews always turn me off… Do you have a good alternative to recommend?

If you want a CoD game, pretty much any CoD up through Black Ops 2 is still decent, but only if Activision actually let’s the game go “on sale”. Halo games have a fantastic story (up until 5 at least) and the Master Chief Collection is usually on sale for $10.
Thanks to modern video games being barely functional slop most of the time, I got into emulation. All these games work beautifully and I have a massive catalogue of high quality games, with creative contents that would not get made anymore today.

I wouldn’t.

But I know people who only play COD and Madden. So if that’s all you are ever going to play, I guess it might make sense to spend all your gaming money on it?

Marketing weirdly effective, for one. They pump a large portion of their budgets into hype and they make just enough back to keep going. It’s like the same people who watch an ad for a fast food place and go even though it’s never as advertised.

And most isn’t direct marketing. They very much pay influencers to buy this slop and worse. You pay a half million to a guy to make something look popular and it becomes popular. It’s very annoying.

I can’t say I like how /Games often circles around negative attention rather than positive.

Activision spent billions on marketing so people will buy these stupid Ultra Editions. Even negative attention gets people thinking about and talking about the game.

Instead, post about the cool indie games out that you think deserve far more attention than this battle pass slop. Let Activision come check up on us and cry because for all their efforts no one even cares to hate on their game.

Theres an asymmetric game out as a demo, called Carnival Hunt. It has a really unique aesthetic, and isn’t all that fun yet, in part because of the formula being refined and players getting better at it. But I like the idea: Rather than TCM’s idea of unlocking doors towards an exit, the survivors, “bunnies”, are trying to climb the floors of a large building, with each method of ascending a floor requiring various tools and making noise. Some ways up are harder to set up but easier to repeat, others only work if the killer is ignoring them.

Let Activision come check up on us and cry because for all their efforts no one even cares to hate on their game.

The reality is that we are on a relatively small decentralized reddit clone.

We truly are the most exceptional exceptions.

Most people cant even begin to think of caring about what we care about.

Activision certainly doesnt.

This is the reality everyone on Lemmy, and even reddit, needs to face. We’re a minority of a minority of people. All the people who glaze and go nonstop about Linux? That’s not even half of Lemmy users, and you can find someone like that in just about every thread on Lemmy, regardless of context.

We’re such a miniscule group of people we probably wouldn’t even register on studies about social behavior.

Ooo Linux mentioned?

What distro are you currently on, I’m intrigued

I’m one of the ones who doesn’t give a shit about that. On my PC I use windows, and my phone is android.
I wasn’t actually trying to be serious by the way

I tried to use OpenSUSE tumbleweed for about 6 months as my main desktop, but eventually due to many of the things I wanted to do being a real pain to do in linux, said fuck it and went back to windows whilst building a new high end gaming rig.

It really sucks as I hate Microsoft with a burning passion, but if you want to play games, or use many CAD packages or make music, or watch videos (specifically with pot player for me, as it absolutely dunks on VLC unfortunately), then you just have to use Windows.

I haaaaaate the obvious attempts by the new taskbar to control user behaviour.

I hate the spying which it takes a while to turn most of it off, I hate… a lot, but the world is how it is.

I’m very thankful for Steamdecks gaining steam so that one day hopefully gaming on linux will be possible, and maybe adoption goes up and then maybe other apps follow.

Maybe the US collapse will have Europe mass switching, causing professional apps to also move over, especially CAD.

Bigwig studio is a great ableton replacement that is Linux native too. Made by some of the original team from ableton too iirc.

Theres also Reaper if you want something closer to FL studio.

I’m not into CAD stuff at the moment but I’m pretty sure there are some really good open source ones out there at the moment that are Linux native also.

I’ve not had any issues with any games on bazzite or cachyos either. Although I don’t play AAA multiplayer games with the shitty anti cheats, which i think are the only ones that don’t work now. Master Chief collection is about as close to that as I go but that works completely fine.

Keep in mind with bazzite and cachyos i also didn’t need to do any tinkering to get the games to work. They just do.
