Took this photo last week w/ my iPhone 15 Pro while reclining just after sundown on St. Andrews Beach, a lovely (and almost deserted this time of year) stretch of coastline at the tail end of the Mornington Peninsula in Australia. Did not adjust any settings. Did not improve when I did, probably because I wasn't holding it steady enough. Still, it really is a marvel how far mobile phone cameras have come.

@briankrebs Cool! It is in fact quite amazing now what you can do with a phone camera. I had time to play with this when I was living in Chile working on commissioning a new telescope last year.

I also have a 15pro. If you can use a travel tripod you can get it still enough that you can increase the exposure time up to 30 seconds. You won’t be given the option unless it is really stable. It makes a big difference in the final result. I took this using that technique🙂.

@ChrisWalter @briankrebs I talked to a bunch of guys and gals who were guides for the Aurora yours in Tromsø, about 10 years ago. They were already impressed back then. Basically the "we'll take your picture with the aurora in the background" business was winding down since phone cameras became really good.
Their suggestion for an impromptu setup: use a paper cup, put a stone in the bottom, put the phone in. Stable enough, apparently...
@ChrisWalter @briankrebs This is really amazing. I sometimes do miss my canon eos and the nice click, but it’s just so big compared to my phone. The thing that I miss the most is however is the viewfinder. Struggling not to start with the cannon again.
