My wife and I bicycled San Francisco-San Diego in 2019 and the only way to bike through Camp Pendleton is on the shoulder of I-5.

Over which the Trump admin just sent artillery fire.

From which one premature shell burst dropped shrapnel on a CHP cruiser.

Imagining shrapnel on our ride.

@mtheriaultsf Yeah, the first thing I thought of when they announced doing an "exercise" was a family cycle trip we'd taken that takes us through Camp Pendleton.

@meganL To ride in the camp itself you need a permit obtained in person from camp HQ, which is on the south end. But we were coming from the north, so to get a permit and ride north-south we would have had to ride I-5 first, come back north with the permit, then use it again to ride south.

Catch-23.

@mtheriaultsf @meganL ugh! I didn’t know they added the permit requirement. I rode through the camp years ago when you could just show up. I’m glad I saw your post because there’s a small chance I might have planned a future ride through the base without realizing the rules had changed.
@boringcyclist @meganL Some sort of permitted group day ride was in progress when we approached and we tried falling in with them, but the Marines were checking riders individually at the north gate and turned us out of the crowd and away.
